Alcohol has always held a very unpredictable position in the human society through the ages. During the era of Alcohol prohibition, it was considered as the “devil in liquid form” but now studies and research indicate that consumption of moderate amounts of alcohol could genuinely be beneficial to ones overall health.
Many questions surround the effect of the consumption of alcohol on a persons sexual health and also the potential of the liquor to interfere with climax scenarios as well as libido. Probably the most common sexual health problem, which has been observed in a large number of people would be Erectile Dysfunction among men. Every year, in the United States, about 300,000 cases are diagnosed with this condition and in addition to this a huge majority of the cases of Erectile Dysfunction are never even reported. The relation between alcohol and erectile dysfunction can be understood by understanding the basic process of achieving an erection. The human brain is stimulated due to sensory and physical(touch) perceptions and when this happens, the brain tends to directs the muscles in the penis to relax which in turn increases the blood flow into the penis, thereby making the penis erect. The pressure due to the inflow of blood helps to expand the penis. A person’s ability to maintain this erection completely depends upon the capacity of his penile muscles to be able to hold the blood pressure over a certain period of time.
Hence, we can conclude that erections depend completely on the flow of blood. This is the primary reason why conditions like diabetes and arterioscelerosis can lead to erectile dysfunction. In the above mentioned conditions, the blood vessels of the body tend to harden which directly affects ones blood pressure. When the blood pressure is affected the amount of blood that flows into the penis is also hampered. Now, the primary action of alcohol is that it increases the blood volume which in turn results in the increase of blood pressure. This state lasts until the extra liquid has been thrown out of the body by the way of urination. Thus, logically speaking, consumption of alcohol must help in achieving an erection due to higher blood pressure and not cause Erectile Dysfunction. Moreover, alcohol also acts a sedative. This effect of the alcohol can help to curb performance anxiety which is one of the major reasons for causing Erectile Dysfunction among younger men. However, to this day, there has been no research, or studies which have been able to refute this claim. Hence, it could be true that men who are intoxicated tend to have better sex or perform better in terms of their erection but surely intoxication is not a definite or proved cure for erectile dysfunction. In addition to this, other different forms of intoxication, such as drug abuse as well as smoking have been definitely shown to be a major cause in nearly fourth of all reported dysfunctions amongst people.
